Today's poem

Bendy bodies

Head, shoulders, knees and nose
Can I touch these with my toes?
If I wriggle, bend and twist
I will look silly in this pose

Ears, elbows, tummy
Can I touch these with my knee?
If I squeeze and push and rock
I wonder what we'll see?

Shoulders, back and hips
Can I touch these with my hand?
If I wiggle, swing and tap
I think I'll do it grand

I like to stretch and bend my body
It is just so much fun!
How many other ways can we move like this?
Come on - everyone.

Reading with Tui

Tui have been learning about keywords in sentences and finding the main idea in a story.

Last week they read an article about William Atack. This week they have used the keywords to summarize the story by making a sock puppet movie on the iPads. (They used the feltboard app to make their backgrounds)

Reading contractions

What is a contraction?

They are 2 words stuck together. They turn into one word by taking some letters out and put in an apostrophe.

Introducing inventor Alex

About one month ago, not long after everyone went to bed, I heard a very loud bang! I was already awake and my big brother Fergus was sleeping so I woke him up. "Fergus, wake up!" I said. Fergus got out of bed and we went outside. There was a small spaceship that crashed into my Dad's red van. Me and Fergus looked inside the spaceship. We found an alien. I talked to the alien and asked where it came from and it said Mars. I asked it to come in for a milo and we talked for ages. Me and Fergus helped the alien to fix the spaceship and it took off back to mars. I made this alien. It looks the same as the one that visited me and Fergus.

Story of the week!

Special Species!

Tuataras are dinosaurs, they are reptiles. Some are kept on islands, far away from predators.
They are green and scaly and as hard as elephants. Some can be as wrinkly as someone flax weaving. All tuataras have claws.
At night tuatara are nocturnal, they have eyes that widen to give the tuatara good vision while hunting for food. Tuatara will die if they get too hot. Can they shed skin? Yes they can shed skin. The tuatara can hibernate. In cold weather they hibernate so they can keep warm. When the tuatara is cold, it's heart beats only once a few minutes! The tuatara can live up to 100 years or over. They can have burrows with sea birds in them. Can the tuatara camouflage like a chameleon? Yes it can camouflage because it can on the forest floor.
I love tuatara because they are a special species in New Zealand.

The gruffalo

Some of the children have chosen the reward coupon "be proud, read aloud". This means they get to choose a book that they love and read it to the class. They have to practice the book, making sure they can read all the words, read loudly with expression so everyone can hear them.

This is Charlie reading one of his favorite stories. Great job Charlie!

Feeding at Sophie's bird cafe

Here is a photo of the birds feeding from Sophie's bird feeder that she made in reading time this week.

I hope they don't get a sore tummy from all that peanut butter!

Bird Cafe

Last week the Fantail reading group read about a bird cafe. This week we made our own bird feeders.

We used our black and yellow thinking hats. What was the worst thing and best thing about making bird feeders.

The Tree by George and Fiona

The tree was cut down by builders who were there. Room 11 and 10 were there too. The builders were cutting the tree down. Then we went back to Room 10 through the back door.
It was scary, the ground was shaking like a earthquake.

Kath Bee by Ripena, Seth and Jayda

Room 10 went to watch Kath Bee in the hall. We sang dragons under my bed. People stood up the front and did the actions. She told the people up the front that there was lots of kids there. We had to be careful of the little kids, they were younger than us, that's why we had to be quiet. We had to listen so we could ask good questions.

Falling Down Tree by Ruby, William and Jared

In the morning on Tuesday we went to watch the tree coming down with Room 10, outside Room 14.
First they chopped the leaves and branches off. The chainsaw sounded like a lion roaring. They climbed up the tree and tied the rope around the top of the tree and a man stood at the bottom to hold it. He held the rope so that it would not fall on Room 10.The other man used a chainsaw to cut the tree down, they sawed the bottom of the tree. It took a long time because it was very fat. It went down like a very loud bomb.
It was awesome because the tree was very old.

Trunky Tree by Sophie, Emily-Jane and Hannah-Mae

Once upon a time there was a humongous tree that lived at Allenton School. It got cut down. First the tree workers cut the branches down. The stem was as wrinkly as a grandma and the tree was as tall as a giraffes neck. The person with the harness went up the tree to cut the branches down. The chainsaw was bright orange and as sharp as a sharks tooth. It was as loud as an elephant stomping when it fell. It was by Room 14.
We felt excited that we got to watch it fall down because we were surprised.

Exploring Board Games

Mrs Moore was away earlier toady... So we played games for 2 and a half hours!

But it wasn't all about playing. First we had to analyze the games. We looked at all the parts of the game. We thought about strengths and weaknesses of the games as well.

We also talked about fair play. How do Allenton A.C.E.S play fairly? I am pleased to report that we are getting better at co-operating with our group! Well done to team 5 who were our overall A.C.E.S today😍😀

Tomorrow we will finish playing the last two games.

The Tree by Holly and Hayley

Today at school a big tree was taken down.
Room 10 got to watch it fall down. First we got to see the man take down the branches. It got as naked as a fish. The tree used to be as tall as the clouds. They cut the bottom of the tree with a chainsaw. It fell down and banged like a bomb.
It was awesome because the tree looked like it was going to fly

Trunky Tree

On Tuesday the tree in front of Room 14 got cut down.
We watched them cut the branches off into little logs of wood. Then it was time for the tree to be cut down. They cut it from the bottom with a chainsaw. It was like an elephant stomping. We all felt it smash to the ground. They cut it down because its getting old and tall. It was as tall as a giraffes neck.
It was scary when it was about to fall because we thought it was going to fall on us.

The Tree by Alex and Theo

Today Room 10 went to look at the tree that fell down.
We got there just in time because they were cutting it down. The chainsaw was as loud as a lion. Since the tree was right by Room 11, they were there.
We felt extremely excited when the tree smashed to the ground. When the tree fell down it sounded like a bomb.

The Tree

Room 10 went outside Room14 to see the humongous tree getting cut down.
First they trimmed the branches off the trunk. The tree looked naked. It smashed to the ground. It smashed to the ground in a flash! It hit the ground like a bomb.
We were scared that it was going to fall on us but it didn't.

Shoes

Today we looked at shoes.

In groups we looked at the physical things we could see and thought why the designer would have used those things on the shoes. What was the function of those parts.

Working in groups is hard work. We looked at what went well in our group and what we want to do better next time.

Technology hunt

Today we learnt that technology is when people make something on purpose. The design process is called technological practice.

Technological outcomes change the man-made world. This can be a good thing or bad thing.

We had a technology hunt in our classroom.

We discovered that nearly everything in our room is a technological outcome. Someone has made everything in our room.

What can you find at home that is a technological outcome?
