Our wharenui

    We are still not sure what a wharenui is for, can you tell us?

    1. Hi mice class.
      The first people to live in New Zealand were Maori people. Each group of people had a special place for ceremonies etc. this is called a marae. On the marae is a building where they could have meetings, welcome new visitors to their marae and other things. The name of this meeting house is wharenui. Maori people only spoke Maori (te reo) until people from England moved here. Wharenui is te reo for meeting house. We are very lucky as New Zealand is the only country that speaks te reo (Maori).       We would love to visit New Zealand and see some of these, but it is far away.
      In Indonesia we have lots of different cultures with all sorts of different style buildings. There is a museum called Taman Mini which has lots of examples. It is a good place to visit.
